Morgan Pyzick to Compete at State Golf
Recent USC graduate Morgan Pyzick competed successfully in Day 2 of the 2018 Section 2A Golf Tournament on Monday, June 4, 2018. The meet took place at North Links Golf Course, outside North Mankato, on a perfect day for golf—with temps in the 80s, sunshine and a light breeze.
After the completion of Day 2, and 36 holes of golf, the participants could qualify for the state tournament in one of two ways—
1) As a member of the first place team
2) As one of the top five individuals that are not members of the first place team
The Springfield High School girls’ golf team won the team competition and will represent Section 2A at the state meet next week.
USC was not competing at the team level, but Morgan was one of the top five individuals after Day 1 and was successful in maintaining her top five status throughout Day 2. Consistent play is very important in the game of golf, and Morgan’s performance is a testament to consistency, as she shot 102 on Day 1 and 101 on Day 2—for a 2-day total of 203. Morgan received a medal for her accomplishment and will continue her golfing career at the state tournament next week. This will be Morgan’s third trip to the state tournament.
The State Golf Tournament is a two day tournament. The participants play 18 holes each day, for a total of 36 holes. The Class 1A State Tournament takes place on Tuesday, June 12-13, 2018, at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minnesota. Although Morgan’s specific tee time is not yet available, the girls begin teeing off at 7:30 a.m. both days. All are welcome to attend and there is no admission charged for spectators.
Congratulations, Morgan, and good luck at state!
Four USC Boys Compete at Section Tourney
Having successfully qualified on Day 1 of the tournament, four USC boys competed in the final day of the 2018 Section 2A Golf Tournament on Monday, June 4, 2018. The meet took place at North Links Golf Course, outside North Mankato, on a perfect day for golf—with temps in the 80s, sunshine and a light breeze.
Recent USC graduate, Aaron Schaper, and junior Nolan Magnuson completed Day 1 with 18-hole scores of 88. Sophomores Carson Wegner and Andrew Heggen completed Day 1 with 18-hole scores of 90. In order to increase your chances of qualifying for the state tournament, Day 2 scores needed to be lower than Day 1 scores. Unfortunately, that was not in the cards for the boys this year.
As has been the case in each of the past two years, the USC boys often finish within a few strokes of one another. In this case, Nolan Magnuson shot a 92 and Andrew Heggen shot at 95, while Aaron Schaper and Carson Wegner tied with 99. When combining Day 1 scores and Day 2 scores, their final scores were as follows:
Nolan Magnuson 180
Andrew Heggen 185
Aaron Schaper 187
Carson Wegner 189
Although their scores were not low enough to qualify for the state tournament this year, this tournament experience will help the USC boys golf team next year, as all but Aaron will be returning to golf action in the spring of 2019.
The Rebel boys’ golf team competed in Day 1 of the 2018 Section 2A Golf Tournament, featuring 78 varsity golfers from 13 areas schools. The meet took place at North Links Golf Course, outside North Mankato, on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, on a very hot day in which it started out sunny, but simply poured as the very last group finished their last hole. In addition to the extreme heat, the gnats were terrible—swarming around the players’ heads throughout the round.
The boys’ team results are as follows:
1) Sleepy Eye United 322
2) New Ulm Cathedral 341
3) Madelia 350
4) Martin County West 353
5) Springfield 355
6) United South Central 356
7) Cedar Mountain 360
8) Gibbon-Fairfax-Wintrop 389
9) Truman-Granada-Huntley-East Chain 410
10) Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 411
11) Minnesota Valley Lutheran 414
12) Mountain Lake Area 422
13) Alden-Conger 428
The top four teams move on to Day 2 of the Section 2A team tournament, which will take place at North Links Golf Course on Monday, June 4, 2018. As the scores above will attest, this was a very close tournament. The Rebel boys finished in 6th place, but had they cut just 3 strokes, they would have been in a tie for 4th place—a tie which USC would have won via predetermined tie breaker mechanisms. With their 6th place finish, however, the Rebel varsity boys’ golf team ends their very successful team season with a respectable winning record of 38-19.
Individually, senior Aaron Schaper and junior Nolan Magnuson led the Rebels with equal scores of 88. Sophomores Carson Wegner and Andrew Heggen tied with 90s to round out the team score of 356. Also participating for the Rebels were junior Blake Legred and sophomore Adam Stenzel, who tied with 96s.
Although the team didn’t make it through to Day 2 of the Section 2A tournament, four Rebel golfers—Aaron Schaper, Nolan Magnuson, Carson Wegner and Andrew Heggen--will be competing in the individual portion of the tournament, which, like the team competition, will take place at North Links Golf Course on Monday, June 4, 2018. At the end of Day 2, the top team and top five individuals will advance to the state tournament, to be held on June 12-13, 2018, at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minnesota.
